When patients come to us with symptoms or years of unsuccessful medical treatment, we often discover that the root of their discomfort lies in the temporomandibular joint, or the TMJ.
Our theory of a holistic, team approach to your health enables us to find the best and most specific combination of TMJ treatments available. Often it takes more than a single approach to find ideal relief. Coordinated treatment may include:
Because TMJ disorder not only affects your jaw but the supporting muscles as well, physical therapy can be extremely useful to help relieve your pain and help you find balance. It is important that we focus on strengthening the muscles that are attached to the jaw joint and disk. We have built professional relationships with highly qualified physical therapists who will work with you to discover the best series of exercises, stretches and therapies to help you feel better fast – and maintain that feeling for life!
Your TMJ Health
Connecting your lower jaw to your upper jaw is the temporomandibular joint (often abbreviated as TMJ). Put your finger on your jaw directly in front of your ears and open and close your mouth – the hinge you feel moving is the TMJ, the joint that allows you to eat, talk and yawn.
Multiple factors affect TMJ health — the teeth, the muscles and the temporomandibular joints – and those who suffer from TMJ disorder have an imbalance in their jaw-to-skull relationship, causing:
- Migraines or Headaches
- Facial Pain
- Neck and Shoulder Pain
- Lack of Neck Mobility
- Jaw Pain
- Clicking in the Jaw
- Limited Movement or Locking of the Jaw
- Swelling of the Face or Mouth
- Difficulty Swallowing
- Ringing in the Ears
- Loose Teeth
- Sore Teeth
- Worn Down or Cracked Teeth
- Numbness in Your Fingers or Arms
- Depression/Mood Swings
Causes of TMJ Disorder
Many people are not able to give their jaw joints, surrounding ligaments and muscles the rest they need. They grind their teeth in their sleep, or they clench their jaw during the day even when they think they are relaxed. Tooth grinding can occur when you are awake or asleep, this grinding and clenching can go undiagnosed until your teeth are severely damaged.
Other causes that lead to TMJ disorder are blunt traumas to your jaw, a poor bite and Sleep Disordered Breathing. Arthritis can also aggravate or cause TMJ disorder.
With advanced dental techniques, we can gently and non-invasively reposition your jaw returning it back to its ideal state of comfort and balance – and help you find the lasting relief you have been looking for.
Here at Healthy Sleep Texas, we won’t just tell you your headache is caused by stress or prescribe painkillers, antidepressants or selective serotonin receptor agonists for migraines. We look at your health as a whole – your sleep and breathing patterns, your jaw health and your teeth – to get to the root of your pain and help you find true and lasting relief.
